Arm Chairs or Recliners?

One of the best pieces of furniture you can get for your living room is a big, comfy chair. However, with all of the options on the market, you may have a hard time deciding what’s best for you. Two of the most popular types of chairs are arm chairs (with or without a footrest or ottoman) and recliners. If you just can’t choose, here are the pros and cons of each.

Arm Chairs

Arm chairs are a great choice for a furniture piece that’s both decorative and functional. Many are highly affordable. They’re available in a variety of limitless colors, patterns, and shapes, so you’ll no doubt find something that’s perfect for you. If you like the idea of putting your feet up in a recliner but don’t want a recliner per se, you can buy an ottoman or other footrest (ottomans also give you extra storage space, so it’s a win-win). They’re smaller than recliners so you can fit them into more room layouts. Arm chairs aren’t for everyone, though. While they can definitely be comfortable for a short time, many people don’t enjoy sitting in them for long periods of time, as they are often stiff. If you don’t have a footrest, that can be uncomfortable as well; however, if you buy an ottoman, that will take up more space in your home, which can be a problem if you’re working with a small room.

Recliners

A recliner will almost always be more comfortable than an arm chair, due to the increased amount of padding on the chair. Because the footrest folds into the chair when you aren’t using it, it also saves space– you won’t be tripping over an ottoman in the middle of the night. Recliners make a great place to take a short nap during the day, so you may even eliminate the need for extra pieces of furniture like a love seat. However, recliners also have their drawbacks. They are large, heavy pieces of furniture, so depending on the size of your space, it can be difficult to even get them into your house! They’re a bit hard to clean underneath for the same reason. Recliners also tend to be more expensive than arm chairs, and your color and pattern options might be more limited (there’s a big variety of arm chairs out there, but a lot of recliners look the same). This can be a good or a bad thing depending on your decor scheme.
