Patio Essentials

Are you gearing up for long summer evenings on your patio? You can transform your patio into your own personal oasis with a few key pieces. Sure, you can make do with little more than a few comfortable chairs, but why not go all out? Your family will get to enjoy the space for the entire season, so you might as well do it right.

Grill

There’s nothing like relaxing outside with the smell of burgers or steaks wafting off a nearby grill. Grilling is one of the essential pastimes of American summer, and not only is it a way to make delicious food– it’s fun as well. Depending on the size of your space and budget, you can choose between smaller options like charcoal grills to large multi-rack gas grills with space for an entire dinner on their racks. Always use proper safety measures when working with a grill, though.

Fire Pit

A fire pit is a great piece to add to your patio. Not only is it a fun conversation starter and enjoyable experience in itself, but it’s also functional: smoke discourages insects, so burning some wood in your firepit in the evening will help keep your family mosquito-bite free. Place your fire pit in a central location away from plants or other objects that could be burnt or melted by the heat.

Umbrella or Canopy

Some patio tables are made with a hole in the middle for an umbrella. If you don’t already have one of these, they’re a great investment, because they’ll give you a place to sit and enjoy your patio without having to endure the hot summer sun. If you have a larger space, you also have the option of installing a large canopy covering, which encloses your entire patio area. These can be purchased as ceiling only versions or models with a ceiling as well as removable side panels, which can completely close off your patio in the case of rain. Whether you use an umbrella or a canopy, keep in mind that both are easily damaged by strong winds, so in the case of summer thunderstorms or hurricanes, you may need to take the fabric off your canopy or bring your umbrella inside.

Lighting

If you plan on using your patio in the evening, lighting can really transform your whole experience. Run string lights along the trees around your patio for a gentle light that’s also functional. Consider citronella torches, which provide light as well as keep mosquitoes at bay. Solar powered lights, which absorb energy during the day and light up at night, are becoming much more affordable and are a great choice if you don’t want to run extension cords across your yard.

Seating

Don’t forget about the comfy spot where you’ll spend all of your summer afternoons or nights. Whether you’ve chosen a wicker set or some nice chairs that can stand up to the elements, you’ll want to have enough to go around if you invite company over. The same is true for an outdoor patio table; you’ll want it to be able to withstand rain and heat while still being a great gathering place for your backyard.

Take the time to make your patio the perfect spot and you’ll never want to go back inside. Don’t forget that we here at Custom Furniture have plenty of patio furniture that will look great in your backyard.
