Having a guest room in your home is great if you’re someone who loves to have guests over. Even though a guest room gets used less than other rooms in your home, you’ll still want it to look its best. Visitors should feel welcome, relaxed and comfortable. If your guest room is lacking those qualities or looking a little boring and dated, it’s time for some improvement.
The floor is the second largest surface in a room so changing the flooring can make a big difference. Carpet is always a popular option for bedrooms because it reduces noise and keeps the floor at a comfortable temperature. If your carpet has worn spots, permanent stains, matted fibers, or dated color, it’s time for a replacement.
Everyone loves hardwood floors, but if you’d prefer low-cost flooring, you can get the same look with laminate. Laminate flooring is available in almost as many colors, finishes, and plank sizes as traditional hardwood, so it’s really versatile and fits with every style.
Paint is always popular because it’s inexpensive and many people opt to make it a DIY project. But if you’d rather not, there are plenty of other options. Wallpaper, fabric, or even low-cost flooring on the walls can give your room a truly unique look.
A popular and trendy use for low cost flooring is as an accent wall. Laminate planks can be arranged vertically, horizontally, diagonally or in a herringbone pattern for visual interest. You could do all the walls with laminate planks. If you like that look, you’ll probably want to stick to a light color to keep the room from being too dark. If those options won’t work for your room, consider doing just a section. For example, the middle of the wall, bottom, a section on each side, an alcove, or an accent on a sliding barn door.
Furniture and Décor
Make sure furniture is in good shape and still appropriate for how the room is being used. Rearranging, adding, or removing pieces can give the room a different look. If you’re going for a drastic style change or update, you’ll probably want to replace it.
Don’t forget the bed! It’s the most important thing in the guest room. A new mattress will help your guests get a great night’s sleep and awake refreshed and ready for the day’s adventures.
For accessories and bedding, use consistent styles and colors, and don’t go overboard. They should also reflect the overall style of the room.
Window Treatments and Lighting
Curtains and custom blinds both work in bedrooms. The right window treatments will not only need to be stylish but let in or block the right amount of light. That will affect the amount of artificial light you’ll need in the room. Updating the light fixtures often gets overlooked, but it will keep the room from looking dated and improve energy efficiency.
There are lots of different ways to improve the look of your guest room and once you do, your guests will feel right at home.
